The Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences (NERS) department is proud to celebrate the exceptional achievements of four outstanding staff members who have been honored through the Staff Incentive Program. This program recognizes individuals who exemplify Michigan Engineering’s vision, mission, and values, awarding recipients up to $1,500.

Rebecca Duguay

Rebecca Duguay, Administrative Assistant, has been recognized for her commitment and dynamic approach to her role. Over the past year, Rebecca played a critical role in managing the busiest faculty candidate visit cycle in recent memory. Her ability to handle last-minute changes ensured seamless experiences for all involved.

Beyond candidate visits, Rebecca skillfully managed the department’s daily operations and organized large-scale events such as the Spring Banquet and Fall Picnic. She also played a key role in onboarding new staff, fostering an inclusive, collaborative environment that has become a hallmark of her contributions.

“Rebecca has made outstanding contributions as an administrative assistant in NERS,” said Department Administrator Besnik Topulli. “Her dedication and organizational skills have greatly benefited our faculty candidate visits, office operations, and departmental events. Rebecca’s positive attitude and teamwork foster a supportive and collaborative environment, making her an invaluable member of our team. This award truly reflects her exceptional performance and commitment.”

Alexander Flick

Alex Flick, Senior Electrical Engineer at the Michigan Ion Beam Laboratory, has been recognized for his tireless commitment to safety, research, and teamwork. As the lab’s Safety Officer, Alex ensures a secure environment for staff, students, and visitors for one of the busiest laboratories on campus.

Alex has demonstrated an exceptional work ethic having completed several projects and critical infrastructure upgrades within the Michigan Ion Beam Laboratory. He routinely collaborates with students and researchers to improve experimentation while also bringing in new technologies to streamline operations resulting in increased research efficiency within the lab.

“Alex’s contributions to MIBL have been transformative,” said Professor Kevin Field. “He has taken on new roles in the laboratory while simultaneously tackling complex research and operation activities such as redesigning control systems for ion beam irradiation chambers and improving vacuum system controls and diagnostics. His endless improvements to the lab have ensured continuation of its cutting-edge status. Most importantly, these contributions have been done with a highly collaborative spirit that makes him a key figure in MIBL, alongside our other outstanding staff.”

Sallee Klein

Sallee Klein, Senior Engineer in Research, has been recognized for her vital contributions to Professor Carolyn Kuranz’s research group. Her expertise in fabricating specialized targets for high-energy-density science experiments places her among a select group of professionals worldwide. Sallee’s creative problem-solving and technical acumen ensure the success of these highly complex experiments, often conducted in collaboration with leading national and international laboratories.

Sallee also plays a pivotal role in mentoring junior research staff and students, fostering a culture of growth and collaboration. Her dedication to advancing both research and team development underscores her invaluable contributions to the NERS department.

“Sallee works diligently to come up with creative solutions to challenging problems to make sure the experiments are successful,” said NERS Professor Carolyn Kuranz. “She really goes above and beyond in all of her work.”

Michelle Sonderman

Michelle Sonderman, Student Administration Manager, has made a transformative impact on the NERS department. Her leadership during the ABET accreditation review process was instrumental, ensuring a smooth and successful outcome. Michelle also spearheaded the introduction of the department’s first-ever minor degrees, opening new opportunities for students across Michigan Engineering and beyond.

Her commitment to student success is further evident in her organization of the largest NERS Career Fair to date, with 23 participating entities, as well as securing $200k in undergraduate scholarships through the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Michelle’s innovative outreach and recruitment initiatives have not only increased enrollment but also elevated the department’s profile within the broader academic and engineering communities.

“Michelle has made exceptional contributions to NERS over the past academic year,” said Topulli. “She successfully led the department through the ABET accreditation review, ensuring a smooth and successful process. Michelle played a pivotal role in drafting the first NERS minor degree proposals, expanding opportunities for students both within and beyond the College of Engineering. She also organized the largest NERS Career Fair to date, significantly enhancing student career development. As co-lead of the NRC Undergraduate Scholarship proposal, Michelle secured $200,000 in scholarships, providing crucial financial support for students. Her efforts in managing undergraduate programs, coordinating outreach events, and volunteering across departments underscore her dedication and leadership. Michelle’s innovative approach has been instrumental in driving our department’s growth, making her highly deserving of this award.”

NERS extends its heartfelt congratulations to Rebecca, Michelle, Sallee, and Alex for their achievements. Their dedication, innovation, and leadership exemplify the very best of what makes Michigan Engineering a leader in academic and research excellence.
