NERS partners with Hanyang University’s Innovative Research Center for Advanced Reactor Development

Collaboration to support student and faculty research, exchange, and funding opportunities.

The Department of Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences (NERS) at the University of Michigan has established a new international partnership with the Innovative Research Center for Multi-Physics Experiment, Modeling, and Simulation (MPEMS) of Advanced Reactors at Hanyang University in South Korea.

This partnership, supported by NERS professors Won Sik Yang and Xiaodong Sun, and led on the Hanyang side by Professor Sung Joong Kim, aims to advance collaborative research in next-generation nuclear reactor technologies. The MPEMS Center is backed by the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and is part of Hanyang’s Nuclear Engineering Department—the first of its kind in South Korea.

Through this collaboration, NERS students and faculty will gain access to new test facilities and experimental data, participate in joint research and publications, and benefit from international exchange opportunities. The agreement also supports outbound mobility for U-M faculty and researchers as well as opportunities for visiting scholars and researchers from Hanyang University.

“We expect this collaboration will help with the ongoing and proposed research activities in NERS on small, advanced reactors through exchange of experimental data and multiphysics simulation tools,” said Yang.

In addition to fostering research collaboration, the partnership is expected to create pathways for research and training funding that will benefit the NERS community.

“I’m grateful to Professors Sun and Yang for helping NERS strengthen our global ties,” said NERS Chair Todd Allen. “Partnerships like this are essential to building our international reputation and expanding opportunities for our students and faculty in advanced reactor research.”
