Regents approve endowed professorship recognizing leadership in nuclear engineering and radiological sciences.

The University of Michigan Board of Regents has approved the appointment of Sara A. Pozzi as the Donald C. Graham Professor of Engineering, effective March 1, 2025, through February 28, 2030.

Pozzi, a professor in the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences (NERS), is internationally recognized for her research in radiation detection and nuclear nonproliferation. She leads the Detection for Nuclear Nonproliferation Group and is the director of the Consortium for Monitoring, Technology, and Verification, a multi-institutional effort supported by the National Nuclear Security Administration.

“It is a great honor to be recognized with the Donald C. Graham endowed professorship,” said Pozzi. “Nuclear security is increasingly important in our society, and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute with my research and development efforts supported by talented and motivated students!”

Throughout her career, Pozzi has advanced the science of radiation detection systems, particularly for applications in nuclear security. Her work has shaped both national policy and international collaborations, making her a leading figure in the field. In addition to her research achievements, she is a dedicated educator and mentor, having graduated 30 PhD students and trained dozens of master’s and undergraduate students and postdoctoral scholars.

The Donald C. Graham Professorship of Engineering is one of Michigan Engineering’s named professorships recognizing faculty members for outstanding contributions to their fields, leadership within the university, and service to the broader scientific community. Graham has supported educational, environmental, and cultural initiatives nationwide, including founding U-M’s Graham Sustainability Institute. His career reflects an enduring commitment to innovation, leadership, and service.

“Professor Pozzi has established NERS as a leader in the uses of nuclear technology for national security,” said NERS Chair Todd Allen. “Through her work, she has graduated many students who are now keeping the U.S. safer. Her selection as the Donald C. Graham Professor of Engineering is well deserved.”
