Two faculty members from the University of Michigan’s Department of Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences (NERS) have been recognized as rising stars in the nuclear field. Professors Aditi Verma and Kevin Field have been named to ANS Nuclear News’s inaugural 40 Under 40 list, celebrating their exceptional contributions to advancing nuclear technology and fostering a more inclusive and innovative future for the industry.
This recognition comes as ANS celebrates its 70th anniversary, marking a generational shift in the nuclear industry. For the first time in modern history, the society has more members under 40 than over 60, a testament to the dynamism and forward-thinking approach of today’s young professionals. Nuclear News’s 40 Under 40 celebrates individuals who are not only advancing their respective fields but also engaging the public, shaping policy, and mentoring future leaders to strengthen the nuclear community.
Aditi Verma, an assistant professor at NERS and core faculty member of the Fastest Path to Zero Initiative, has made waves through her research and advocacy. Her work focuses on nuclear design informed by equity and public engagement. A member of the NEA Global Forum’s Working Group on gender balance, Verma has been instrumental in driving initiatives that make nuclear technology accessible and inclusive. Her innovative approach to policy and community-centered design has redefined how the industry connects with diverse audiences.
Kevin Field, a NERS associate professor, is recognized for his contributions to advanced nuclear materials and reactor design. His work spans aging management, accelerated irradiation experimentation, and the development of innovative materials to ensure the safety and longevity of nuclear systems. As a leader in both academic and industry collaborations, Field’s efforts have been pivotal in addressing challenges in material performance and deploying next-generation nuclear technologies.
“Maintaining our #1 ranking requires recruiting talented early-career faculty, and these awards clearly demonstrate that our future is bright,” said NERS Chair Todd Allen. As the nuclear industry turns its focus toward innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity, leaders like Verma and Field are shaping the path forward. Their recognition on the 40 Under 40 list serves as an inspiration for the next generation of engineers, scientists, and policymakers dedicated to advancing nuclear’s role in addressing global challenges.
