NERS researchers are supporting efforts to design experiments for a Versatile Test Reactor

The multi-institution collaboration is designing experiments to test various molten salt reactor technologies.

An article recently published by Idaho National Laboratory (INL) highlights the U.S. Department of Energy’s efforts to build a Versatile Test Reactor (VTR), which would mimic the effects sustained over years or decades of use in a power reactor core.

Researchers in NERS Professor Xiaodong Sun’s group are collaborating with researchers from the University of Utah and Virginia Commonwealth University to design experiments to test various molten salt reactor technologies in anticipation of the VTR’s construction.

Adam Burak, an assistant research scientist at NERS, tightens the fitting holding a 6-zone profile thermocouple in the experimental cartridge. The cartridge is designed to test salt sampling concepts and instrumentation to be integrated into VTR extended test assemblies to support experiments for molten salt reactors.
